Geneva Art Pottery, was established in 1988 by Claire Berger and former partner John Bailey upon returning from ten years of work in La Borne, a tiny village nestled in the forests of central France.

La Borne is renowned for its traditional pottery and Wood-fired kilns as well as for the forty or so contemporary potters who have come from around the world to work with the famous "La Borne" clay. These potters have made La Borne well known in the art world.

It is there that John and Claire established their reputation and exhibited in Germany, Jersey, England, Switzerland as well as all over France.

In the summer of 1988, Berger and Bailey designed and built a 50 ft. long wood fired tunnel kiln.  The first firing, which took four days, produced over 1,500 pots with rich colour and surface variation. A more "earthy" type of pottery than the gas fired, colorfully glazed pieces.

The

Studio/Gallery presents a variety of wheel thrown and handbuilt pottery specializing in one of a kind decorative and functional pieces made with a colourful palette of glazes,
oxides and stains.

Tea pots, bowls, platters
and vases in high fired stoneware.
No lead is used.  Pots are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Claire spent her years in France learning the art of wood-firing and the use of natural ash glazes.  The materials used and the type of firing are closely related to the oriental methods used in the Chinese Dynasties and in ancient Japan, Korea, and China.

Claire's work combines this oriental approach, Chinese copper reds, known as "Sang de Boeuf", Japanese Tenmokus, with contemporary style.  Berger's pots are often glazed with natural wood ash, vine ash and lavendar ash imported from France.

Her work ranges from tea bowls to large decorative platters and vases, all one of a kind, non-leaded high fired stoneware and Raku.
